Letter D

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

It usually takes me a day to work out a letter in such style. It could of taken shorter! But I want something ace! So I have been a little fussy. And I swore to myself that I will finish the whole alphabet no matter how long it might take. That’s going to be a big commitment and challenge cause I’m such a person with little patience. Anyway, 1/6 finished so far! First step!

Oriental philosophy and contemporary graphic design

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

I always find this subject interesting although James keeps telling me the Westerners are skeptical. I’ve been doing the research on Fengshui and other Oriental phsilosiphy ever since ages ago. But I’ve never applied it on real life until I have to, be it now. Yes we are moving place and everything related with interior design must be in a perfect harmony in my eyes, not just because I’m a fussy and demanding libra designer but also that I’m a Chinese and I’m not going to sleep under a freaking beam! I’m therefore starting to collect some samples and readings on this.

All architects in China need to do a Fengshui course before they start to really a build a house. But no one notices that it would be quite important for graphic designers as well. Why? Because it’s visual, and it causes massive psycological impact on the business that it deals with. for examples, branding, logo design, website layout, etc, you can list a huge amount of design subjects applicable. However, branding is considered the most essential for the business, as imporatant as the face for a person,  the interior design of a house. An irresponsible designer could ruin your business by ignorance. Maybe someone would say “It’s just a small logo, it only has to be pretty.” Nah nah nah… if something small has been continuously exercised everyday by everyone, it is not small. That’s how a stalactite is made after all. :)

But all of sudden James says: “it will only make it look crap!”
LOL. No.. it only means there’ll be more disciplines and that’s all. So that’s why it’s so difficult to achieve a brilliant design piece with Fengshui! :)

I have concluded some of my experience here.

Colour:
Colour is vital in in terms of art and design. From psychological point of view, colour is the first thing to catch your eyes. If someone has really bad eyesight, he or she will be still be able to see the colour from far off but nothing else. Thus experienced designers work on really nice colour combination (or colour chart) before they start designing. If your business is all about paper, say, anything to do with printing, publishing, choose theme colours from Illustrator (better in CS4) such as ‘Mother Nature’, ‘forest’, even ‘flowers’, whatever relevant to what paper is made of. You still have loads of choices. Once you have selected 3 - 8 swatches, stick with them. If your business is all about fashion, decoration, digital, IT, fire should be the right element that you should put into your branding, again, get the ‘Summer’ colour chart, anything with a mood of summer, but don’t put too much ‘cyan’ or ‘blue’ in it. And banking business or economics will do with ‘water element’ something like blue. Brown will make it worse. There are too many examples.
